SEO vs SEM: Which is Better for Your Business?

SEO and SEM to most people are just strange acronyms that don’t have much meaning to them, however, in a Marketing perspective, they are some of the most essential words in today’s digital age. Firstly what do they stand for?

SEM Stands for Search Engine Marketing, this refers to paid advertisements on search engines such as Google or Bing. These adds are commonly known as Pay per click ads or PPC ads which are built upon select keywords within the search engine. To find out more about SEM, check out Google Adwords.

Below is an example of an SEM advertisement listed through Google Ads:

SEO, on the other hand, stands for Search Engine Optimisation, in other words, how easily a search engine such as Google or Bing can find your website organically. This is done in a few different ways. However, the most common is website optimisation, this is done through correctly choosing the content that you wish to be associated with. For example, a store that sells fruits and vegetables should focus only on having relevant content for fruits and vegetables. By doing this, the website has an increased chance of being picked up by the search engine whenever someone searches those keywords. For google practice and measure, creating quality blogs instead of the amount of content produced is far more critical. There are many tools and platforms to generate content ideas by merely searching target keywords and focusing on search volumes. Here are a couple of options for creating content you can refer to are UberSuggest or MOZ for inspiration and overall research.

Understandably this can be a little confusing, they both work on keywords? Well yes, however, one is paid keywords (SEO) to promote the website, these ads are the first thing you see when you search that specific keyword. Whereas search results relating to SEM are free and are found through the relevance, the website has to the keyword.

In summary, SEO is an Organic search strategy developed through website optimisation, and SEM is a paid search strategy provided by the search engine of your choice.
